Prof Davis wins the 2026 Kuhmerker Career Award in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the field
School of Education Professor Bob Davis has received the 2026 Kuhmerker Career Award in recognition of his work as teacher and researcher in moral education at its intersection with his distinctive areas of expertise in Religion, Literature and Culture.
The prestigious award from The Association For Moral Education (AME) recognises exceptional individuals who have made outstanding, long-term scholarly contributions that have made a significant impact on the fields of moral psychology, philosophy, or education, or civic or values development.
The citation for the award, presented at the recent annual AME conference in Madrid, highlights Bob’s longstanding contribution to the understanding of the moral and educational implications of study in the Humanities; immersion in the narratives and the arts of diverse peoples and societies; critical reflection on the role of tradition and change in moral development. The text also highlighted Bob’s reputation for the cultivation of ‘a community marked by both rigor and collegiality.’
Commenting on his award, Bob expressed both his surprise and his deep satisfaction. ‘To be recognised in this manner by my peers in the AME, to which I have belonged for over 30 years, is very heartening. The AME embodies so many of the values of collaboration, inclusivity, communication and shared learning that I hope are stamped on my own research, teaching and service across many different educational communities and institutions. Since my academic career has been based for so many years at the University of Glasgow, I receive the Kuhmerker Award also for the School of Education and the many outstanding colleagues I have worked with here.’
Previous winners have included Helen Haste, Lawrence Kohlberg, Bob Selman, Wolfgang Edelstein, Mary Brabeck, and former SoE Professor James C Conroy, as well as many other leading figures in the fields of philosophical, psychological and educational research.
