On May 28, a committee of SoE students organised an online event focused on supporting social justice in classrooms, hosted by renowned educator and author Mary Cowhey.

This event, titled 'Social Justice Day by Day: Making Change in Everyday Praxis' was inspired by the learning on the MEduc Year 5 course Education and Society, led by Professor Brianna Kennedy. After the course, in order to further develop her learning and understanding of implementation in the Scottish context, student Fiona Wynne reached out to Cowhey and organised the event.

Cowhey, author of the book "Black Ants and Buddhists: Thinking Critically and Teaching Differently in the Primary Grades", hosted the online event which focused on exploring how teachers could embed social justice into their daily classroom practice. She spoke passionately about social justice and its implementation in the classroom before answering questions submitted by attendees ahead of time, making concrete links to classroom activities, and exemplifying how to overcome barriers and challenges by drawing from her own experiences. Staff and students alike responded positively and were given the opportunity to network and share strategies and ideas at the end of the event.

The session was organised and hosted by MEduc student Fiona Wynne, supported by Julie Finlayson, Jonathan Smith, and EAS course lead Professor Brianna Kennedy
