Modernism and Modern Literature
The Glasgow Modernist cluster is one of the strongest concentrations of its kind in the UK, with one of the largest and most active postgraduate communities in the College of Arts & Humanities. The School played a founding role in the Scottish Network of Modernist Studies (SNOMS) (2008), which holds a regular programme of one-day conferences attracting international participants. We have hosted numerous major research events, including the SNOMS December 1910 Centenary Conference (2010), the inaugural conference for the British Association for Modernist Studies, which incorporated a public event on early cinema at the Glasgow Film Theatre. The School houses the Finnegans Wake Reading Group, which brings together a wide range of participants across and beyond the University for weekly discussions of this modernist masterpiece.
Other recent high-profile activities include special issues of the journals Modernist Cultures, Literature and History, and Textual Practice, edited by members of the cluster; the Contradictory Woolf conference (2011), which involved collaboration with Glasgow Women's Library and which confirmed the School’s status as a centre of excellence for Woolf studies; the Edwardian Ford Madox Ford Conference (2011); Jonathan Franzen and Contemporary Realisms (2013); and a conference marking the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of CLR James's Beyond a Boundary (2013). In collaboration with colleagues in Glasgow’s School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, the School hosted the AHRC-sponsored Values of Environmental Writing Research network (2010-11).
