Research interests

Highly motivated and ambitious candidates are invited to apply for a fully-funded PhD studentship in the Miras Group. The PhD scholar will exploit a timely opportunity to implement new methodologies developed in Miras group to tailor electronic and catalytic properties of molecular and 2D materials using directed self-assembly approaches for accessing a host of artificial heterostructures with potential applications ranging from electronic devices to hydrogen evolution catalysts. This research incorporates aspects from across chemistry, involving synthesis, characterization and analysis. Opportunities will also be available for travel to national and international conferences to present research results as well opportunities to cross the disciplinary boundaries by working together with physicists and engineers.

Research Interests

My research interests are primarily focused on the development of metal oxide/chalcogenide molecule based materials for energy applications. The current research is focused on the discovery of simple preparation routes to chalcoxide-based composite functional materials as well as the understanding of fundamental processes in the self-assembly of supramolecular clusters and molecular nanomaterials with modular magnetic, redox, electronic, conductive and catalytic properties.

A synergistic research strand which is being developed in parallel, involves the fundamental understanding, control and design of self-assembled chemical systems. I am interested in exploiting novel methodologies for the discovery and design of functional molecular devices. Other recent research projects have investigated the discovery of intermediate reaction structures in an effort to understand the underlying chemistry in the self-assembly of polyoxometalate systems and extraction of crucial mechanistic information utilizing high resolution ESI-MS techniques.
