Dr Vera Wolkowicz
- Lecturer in Musicology (Music)
Research interests
My research focuses on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century classical music in and from Latin America. I examine how various agents—composers, critics, audiences, and institutions—have engaged with ideas of nationalism, modernity, and cultural identity through music. I am particularly interested in tracing the history of transatlantic connections between Latin American and European musics and musicians, and how these exchanges have shaped musical developments in Latin America. As a historical musicologist working on Latin America, I am also committed to interrogating the boundaries between ‘Western’ and ‘Non-Western’ musics, contributing to current debates in global musicology.
