Dr Paul Garside

Lecturer in Conservation Science (History of Art)

Biography

I studied chemistry at the University of Southampton, where I remained to carry out PhD research investigating and characterising the properties of natural fibres (which was awarded in 2002). I subsequently joined the Textile Conservation Centre (University of Southampton) as Research Fellow in Conservation Science and taught the science component of the Centre’s textile conservation MA. I then joined the British Library as Conservation Scientist in 2009, where I managed scientific analysis, assessment of long-term behaviours and development of risk management strategies. In 2021, I joined the Kelvin Centre for Conservation and Cultural Heritage Research (University of Glasgow) as Lecturer in Conservation Science.

Research interests

My research interests focus on the application of scientific and analytical techniques to better understand and preserve cultural heritage artefacts, particularly textiles, books and paper, as well as the other materials that are commonly associated with them.
