In a contribution to a plenary session on 'Opportunities in a digital age', Philip argued that the press is still going through an open-ended great transition. There is evidence from CCPR's current ESRC-funded research (taking the examples of the FT and Telegraph) that the quest for a viable business model is being undertaken but is unresolved. Our RSE-funded project shows that the Scottish press, like the press of similar sized countries, is focused finding on a new business model and the constitutional question is of secondary importance for its future. Whatever the present problems, there's every reason to think that institutional journalism will continue to capitalise on its brands and find a route to survival, based on an evolving mix between print and digital.
