Visiting professorships at the Sorbonne and the LSE

Professor Philip Schlesinger has been appointed to visiting professorships at the London School of Economics and the Sorbonne.

Professor Philip Schlesinger has been appointed to visiting professorships at the London School of Economics and the Sorbonne.

Professor Philip Schlesinger, who is an LSE alumnus, will undertake research seminars for staff and students and explore collaborative research with LSE’s Department of Media and Communications.

Head of the Department of Media and Communications at LSE, Professor Sonia Livingstone said: “We are delighted to honour Professor Schlesinger’s contribution to the intellectual development of our field and welcome this chance to explore mutual interests in research and teaching.”

Professor Schlesinger said: “I have had longstanding cordial connections with the department at the LSE where I was once external examiner and which invited me to give a public lecture last year. I look forward to developing research collaborations with colleagues at LSE with whom I share interests and also to a short visit this autumn to the Sorbonne.”

While at the Sorbonne, Professor Schlesinger has been invited to lead some research seminars and teach postgraduates in several fields, including international communications, journalism and business. He will also be exploring areas of research collaboration in areas of common interest.

Philip Schlesinger was appointed to the University’s new Chair in Cultural Policy and became Academic Director of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research in January 2007. He was previously Professor of Film & Media Studies at the University of Stirling from 1989-2006, and founding Director of Stirling Media Research Institute.

He is presently Chair of the Scottish Advisory Committee of Ofcom (the UK’s communications regulator). His current research interests include: cultural creativity and government policy; media theory and media policy; the European public sphere and ethnography and representations of exile.
