Decolonising Teaching and Research

The Decolonising Teaching and Research Working Group seeks to support staff and students who want to ensure that their work is diverse, inclusive and supportive, recognising where and how to counter Euro-centric assumptions that permeate teaching, research and scholarship. Through informal and formal events, including workshops and ongoing peer-to-peer support, the group will support and encourage the diversification of curricula and research practice, to reflect on and question existing historical perspectives and theoretical practices, and to foster new and inclusive approaches.

Disability

This working group will focus on issues related to disability, access and inclusion in our research, learning and teaching environments and communities. The group is comprised of stakeholders from across the School, including disabled and neurodiverse staff and students and their allies. The group’s aims are to to identify and address barriers to inclusion for disabled and neurodiverse people, both within our School and in the broader university community. This includes developing accessible resources and services, creating awareness campaigns, addressing gaps in the curriculum and challenging stigmatising or stereotypical content, and reviewing and advocating for policy change and additional funded support for student services. The group is underpinned by an understanding of disability as an intersectional identity and experience that informs every aspect of the EDI committee’s work.

Gender-based violence

The Gender Based Violence Working Group aims at discussing and tackling issues related to Gender Based Violence (GBV) relating to the lives of staff and students in the School of Creative Arts and Culture. Through workshops and discursive events targeted at training in awareness, language and impact of GBV on the lives of our staff and students, the working group aims to draw from best practice both in and out of the academy, in order to raise awareness, affect change and support our peers and colleagues in the SCCA and the university more widely.

Health and Wellbeing

The Health and Wellbeing Working Workgroup (H&WB WG) aims to promote good practices within the work environment amongst research and teaching staff, GTAs, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and professional services and technical staff, whether part-time or full-time, fixed term or permanent. More specifically, the working group aims to promote gender equality, work-life balance, appropriate behaviour, and a welcoming and healthy atmosphere for all staff and students.  The H&WB WG aspires to generate ideas/practices for improvements and lays down a straightforward process that supports equality and wellbeing amongst members of staff and students. To combat the influence of unconscious biases, the WG invests in long term improvements in School practices ensuring everyone has responsibility for these matters.

LGBTQ+

The LGBTQ+ Working group (LGBTQ+ WG) exists to provide a voice for LGBTQ+ staff and students within the committee. Our group proactively seeks to discuss issues which may have an impact on our working and study and more specifically to look for solutions to issues which are raised, to promote an inclusive environment within our school where everyone can feel confident to be themselves. Our group seeks to challenge discrimination or negative sterotyping, to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues within the school, and to provide support to LGBTQ+ students and staff. To achieve this, our WG reports regularly to the EDI Committee and welcomes suggestions/recommendations from the SCCA community.
