Pillar 1: Research Excellence and Strategic Focus

1a: Scientific Excellence and Focus
We will build on our internationally recognised strengths to deliver world-leading research into the causes of and treatments for cardiovascular a
nd metabolic diseases. Over the next ten years, we will synergise our strengths in clinical, discovery, and translational research in cardiovascular and metabolic health, utilising our unrivalled access to patient samples and outstanding college facilities to the mutual benefit of clinical and discovery researchers. SCMH2035 will continue to build critical mass around established areas of strength across our three key research themes:
Cardiac: arrhythmias, cardio-oncology, cardiac physiology & electrophysiology, heart failure, myocardial injury and repair.
Vascular: stroke, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, vascular injury and repair.
Metabolic: cardiovascular risk, diabetes, endocrinology, kidney disease, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, sport and exercise medicine.
Our cross‑cutting themes provide the shared foundations that integrate and strengthen all our research areas, driving innovation and accelerating translation across cardiovascular, vascular, and metabolic science:
Cross cutting themes: cell signalling, clinical trials, data science, imaging, novel therapeutics
SCMH2033 will also support emerging research areas with the potential for future leadership, impact, and innovation.
Our strategic priorities will be aligned with the MVLS College Futures themes: Fundamentals of Life, Advanced Therapeutics & Diagnostics, Health Inequalities, and Planetary Health. We will support ‘team science’ and build interdisciplinary research teams that bridge themes and methodologies, incorporating other Schools and Colleges of University of Glasgow, as well as national and international partners.
Research recruitment will be carefully considered to both simultaneously strengthen our world leading research profile and enhance delivery of high-quality, research-led teaching. By recruiting staff whose expertise complements our curricular priorities, we will create a virtuous cycle in which cutting-edge research informs teaching, and teaching in turn supports the development of new research directions (see Pillar 4c).
1b: Responsiveness and Agility
Over the next 2 years, we will develop internal systems that not only allow us to proactively prepare for funding opportunities which align with our established and emerging strengths but also enable a rapid response to new funding opportunities and emerging research priorities. This will require us to maintain budgetary flexibility to invest in high-potential new ideas and cross-cutting research initiatives. We will support innovative research collaborations using sandpits, and cross-theme workshops, and we will regularly review and refine strategic priorities through internal and external review.
