Outreach Training and School Workshop Opportunity's

Details on this years schools workshops and training for volunteers.

Teaching Students

At the school we have a strong portfolio of outreach actives that we deliver to schools within Glasgow each year. We are asking if any staff or students would like to be trained to deliver our hugely successful school workshops with a view to then going out into schools over the course of this year? These engagement opportunities are extremely rewarding for those involved. They are also becoming increasingly important to funders to demonstrate that we are effectively communicating our science to the public.

The two workshops we will be running are “Have-a-heart" and “Build-a-Brain". Two volunteers will attend a school and deliver (up to) 3 workshops within a standard school day. We always like to ensure enough time to let the children ask the volunteers questions. You get some amazing questions! We are hoping that one of each volunteer pair will have previous experience of the delivering a workshop. This will mean the new volunteer is supported while our pool of experienced volunteers grows.

Have-a-heart" was developed by students and staff in SCMH in 2023. After Professor Jason Gill had secured funding through the MLVS Engagement awards. The workshop teaches school children (p5-7) about the heart, what it does, some comparative physiology using 3D printed hearts and finally letting them fold their own origami hearts. This workshop is a mix of prerecorded videos by Dr Lizzie Burns and face to face delivered content.

If you are interested in being trained to deliver this workshop training will take place on Wednesday 28th of February in C349 of the BHF GCRC. Please email Lorraine.Work@glasgow.ac.uk to register if you wish to register.

“Build-a-brain” has already been delivered to over 1000 school pupils since 2022. This workshop teaches children about various brain structures while they build their own brain with modelling clay. This workshop also uses videos recorded by Dr Lizzie Burns to help deliver the content.

If you wish to be trained in this workshop, please contact Lorraine.Work@glasgow.ac.uk

Several schools have already shown interest in us attending to deliver both workshops, so you could potentially be able to get involved very quickly and gain this valuable experience!
