Institute of Cancer Sciences new Athena SWAN Chair and News

Christina Halsey

Dr Chris Halsey

Many thanks to all of you who have been getting involved with all the Athena SWAN activity in ICS. We have launched some new and improved initiatives to help support work-life balance and those with caring responsibilities in the Institute. These include

•    Introduction of a core working hours policy – all Institute meetings should take place between 10am-4pm to allow those with flexible working patterns to attend
•    Introduction of a parental leave “buddying scheme” to support individuals pre and post maternity or shared parental leave
•    A family friendly information pack on the website that provides links to HR policies and University initives and support groups.
•    A new section on “inspirational women in ICS” and case studies of male and female staff at a variety of grades discussing work-life balance on the website.

In addition, we are working hard to enhance career development opportunities for professional and support, ECR and grade 8/9 staff. Over the coming months we hope to run sessions on promotions, support for grant writing and are developing an Institute mentoring scheme.

Please see the new revamped ICS Athena SWAN webpages for more information on all these activities and more https://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/cancersciences/athena/.  We are keen to make these pages as useful and informative as possible, so if you feel anything is missing then get in touch.

Finally, 8th March is International Women's Day 2018. There are many events planned both on the Garscube Campus and throughout the University, details to follow soon!

We are always looking for new ideas and new recruits to our committee. If you would like to get involved, please email me chris.halsey@glasgow.ac.uk.
