Biography

Nuran is currently Professor of Innovation Management in the Adam Smith Business School. Nuran previously worked at Strathclyde University (UK), Ozyegin University (Turkey), Aalborg University (Denmark), and Bilkent University (Turkey). Nuran has also held Visiting Scholar positions at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), at the London Business School (UK) and Trinity College Dublin (Ireland).

Nuran has published award winning, theory-driven, policy - and practice - relevant articles across the fields of technology innovation, open innovation, digital innovation and innovation strategy. Nuran's current research examines emerging innovation trends (such as artificial intelligence, 5G) and their implications in the organisations in different sectors (i.e., health, telecommunications, public and third sector) and impacts into the society. Nuran is also working on responsible innovation approaches that will maximise societal benefit by enhancing productivity and developing ethical and well-regulated Innovation approaches for science, technology, engineering and business.

She is co-chair Innovation and Product Development Conference board.

Exploring aspects of technological, open business collaborative models at organizations, Nuran pursues a mainly curiosity driven, yet theoretically rigorous, empirically grounded and practice-relevant, research agenda.  She has published more than 60 articles and papers, edited numerous books and publications and has won several awards such as ‘Most Inspirational Conference Paper Award’ and ‘3rd Best Conference Paper Award’ by European Academy of Management Conference (2016), BAM conference Best Development Paper Award’ (2015), EmeraldLiteratiNetwork, Highly Commended Paper Award (2005), EurOMA-POMS Best Conference Paper Award (2003). She is on the editorial Boards of two respected academic journals in innovation research (Journal of Product Innovation Management and Creativity and Innovation Management). Maintaining a consistently upward trajectory of funded research projects, she has secured more than £5 million of research funding from: European Space Agency, British Council, Global Challenge Research Found, The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), ESRC, Innovate UK, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and Scottish Enterprise. Nuran is also a sought after speaker for academic conferences and practitioners’ events. Just as importantly, she has established extensive international networks with British, European and American scientists, business people and policy makers.

Nuran has served on a number of grant awarding bodies, including: UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships Peer Review College (2021- current), The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, ESRC/EPSRC  Grant Assessor (2019-current), Grant Assessor for the Canadian Research Centre (SSHRC). (2018-current).

Currently, Nuran is leading two cross disciplinary projects based on responsible innovation approaches that will maximise societal benefit by enhancing productivity and developing ethical and well-regulated Innovation approaches for science, technology, engineering and business.

  1. By leveraging established, Indonesian, community health clinics called Posbindu, the project called TANDEM (Targeting Non-communicable Diseases through Interactive Health Ecosystems), developed an innovative proof of concept for digital health solutions (video). Using a pioneering interactive digital health ecosystem, TANDEM brings together business model, healthcare and data analytic solutions in a novel way to screen for and manage NCDs. This new interface of digital technology and a social business model connects key players - hospitals, patients, health workers - to combine and exchange expertise and knowledge across countries, disciplines, industry and academia in the UK and Indonesia. TANDEM has led to major health and social improvements in community health clinics in Indonesia: it is improving the care and management of NCD patients, enabling early diagnosis and developing new strategies for targeted therapy, controlling healthcare costs, improving patient quality of life and promoting healthcare policies. Moreover, it exemplifies how UofG plays its part as a global citizen, engaging to make tomorrow better through a creative solution with real, life-changing impact.
  2. Nuran is an Academic Lead and supported by Prof. Robbie Paton with the European Space Agency (ESA), UK Space Agency and the telecommunication provider O2, in a research project to develop and commercialise the technology needed for driverless cars (see video (18) Smart, Green, Connected Vehicles- The Future of Transportation - DARWIN PROJECT - YouTube). Under ESA’s programme of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES), a budget of €29 million has been ringfenced for Project DARWIN, €5 million of this budget has been allocated for the first phase. Nuran is leading for developing responsible business models and collaborative innovation frameworks for different use cases in sectors such as public, retail, transportation, and health. As part of this project, University of Glasgow opened the DARWIN innovation laboratory to provide an interactive learning and collaboration space.
