Biography
I am a social science researcher specialising in the intersections between urban participation, public spaces, new labour social movements, socio-environmental activism, municipal governments and participatory governance. I hold two PhDs, one in Politics from the University of Glasgow, and other and Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, where I graduated with distinctions.
In my second PhD (University of Glasgow, 2025), I demonstrated how new labour social movements in Argentina, who define themselves as popular economy, are reimagining and reconstructing local public spaces in a participatory manner. My research advances existing knowledge by highlighting how workers in this popular economy sector, who have been systematically excluded from the formal labour market, are creating new ways of earning a living by establishing participatory and cooperative workplaces. They cultivate food using agroecological, environmentally friendly methods on formally abandoned public lands. They show their commitment to defending and creating public initiatives against processes of extractivism, privatisation, and dispossession occurring in the Latin American region. Emerging as alternatives to the hegemony of agribusiness and revitalising labour organisations, these popular economy movements establish agroecological and participatory workplaces to advance social inclusion, environmental regeneration, and food sovereignty.
During my first PhD (University of Buenos Aires, 2020), I investigated participatory budgeting programmes in two Argentinian cities. I explored how participation is constructed in these public policies designed to encourage the development of public projects. I selected two programmes established by local governments with differing political orientations, centre-right and centre-left respectively, which enabled me to challenge the assumption that participatory policies are solely promoted by specific political affiliations and to illustrate the common methods they employ to construct participation. My research reveals that this participation is mainly state-driven, and participants are asked to acquire specific knowledge about the functioning of state institutions, such as navigating the linear stages of policy cycles to develop public projects, and articulate their demands in ways that reflect the language of state institutions.
In my two PhD theses, I theorised about the emergence of a new type of state that incorporates participatory principles into its management, especially at the local level. governmental actors value this participatory principle. This principle is expressed in the idea of having an ‘open doors’ municipal government, combined with proximity and municipalist principles of defending the right to make decisions autonomously from the local political arena.
I have been awarded numerous scholarships to fund my PhDs, from different bodies including the European Research Council (ERC) and the Argentinian National Scientific and Technological Research Council (CONICET).
In addition to my research, I have extensive teaching experience, having served as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Glasgow and the University of Buenos Aires for Politics courses (International Relations and Political Theory). I have also taught specialised courses on Methodology and Youth and Childhood Participation for the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO).
My work not only advances theoretical understanding but also offers practical insights into the implementation of participatory governance and socio-environmentally friendly and socially inclusive economic practices.

Research interests
My research interests lie at the intersection of urban participation, public spaces, new labour social movements, socio-environmental activism, municipal governments, and participatory governance. I explore mechanisms and practices that enable citizen and movement participation in urban settings, particularly through the use of public spaces. I investigate the dynamics and impacts of new labour social movements, focusing on their role in creating socially inclusive and environmentally friendly workplaces. I study the interactions between municipal governments and these movements, examining how participatory governance can be implemented to foster sustainable and inclusive urban development. These interests drive my research agenda, aiming to contribute both theoretical insights and practical solutions to contemporary political and social challenges.
