The Adam Smith Business School is delighted to host the Stablecoins and Central Bank Digital Currency: Financial Stability in a Digital World.
A stablecoin is a digital currency that offers price stability, as it is backed by a reserve asset (e.g. USD), while being issued by a private company. Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) was introduced as the traditional financial system’s response to the rise of stablecoins and their rapid growth. A CBDC is backed by a central bank and maintains the credit quality of that institution.
A recent influential paper by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), “The Next-Generation Monetary and Financial System”, outlined key risks associated with stablecoins — including those related to monetary policy, illicit activities, and more.
This online policy roundtable will focus on the potential destabilising effects on the financial system arising from the use of stablecoins.
