Biography

I am a public health researcher and mosquito biologist, with interests in surveillance and control of vector-borne diseases. I am a former Director of Science at Ifakara Health Institute, where I maintain an active research program with several partners and students. I have served in various advisory groups, including WHO Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG) and the Gates Foundation’s Malaria Strategic Advisory Panel (MSAP).

I began my education in Kenya, studying Public Health at Moi University College of Health Sciences (2001-2005) and subsequently a masters degree in Applied Parasitology at the University of Nairobi. I obtained a second masters degree in Geo-Information Sciences, Earth Observation and Environmental Modelling at Lund University, Sweden. In 2012, I was awarded a PhD in Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, followed in 2019 by an MBA in International Health Management from the University of Basel & Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Switzerland. I previously held the 2021 Heath Clark Lectureship at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute –Gates International Research Scholars Award (2017-2023) and a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship for Public Health & Tropical Medicine  (2014-2019).

My research is centred on the biology, control and elimination of mosquito-borne diseases, notably malaria. I currently have a large portfolio of work covering the field and lab studies on dominant vector species, new systems for monitoring disease transmission, and strategies for integrating new technologies such as genetically modified mosquitoes into disease control programs. I am also very passionate about improving ecosystems for young researchers in Africa

Research interests

I have a broad interest in public health research, and a particular focus on the biology and control of vector borne diseases. My research seeks to understand the transmission patterns and their drivers. I study risk patterns in human populations and how various changes in the environment or human behaviours might affect these risk patterns. Current research initiatives include.

  1. Population biology of dominant malaria vectors
  2. Ecological management practices for the control of vector-borne diseases
  3. Advancing infrared & AI techniques for entomological and parasitological investigations of malaria and onchocerciasis
  4. Innovative methods for entomological monitoring of vector-borne diseases.
  5. Investigating human behaviors and activities relevant to the risk of mosquito-borne diseases
  6. Strategies for integrating genetically modified mosquitoes in disease control.
  7. Design and testing of new approaches for control of malaria vectors
  8. Investigating the mobility of mosquitoes along human and cargo transportation routes
  9. Investigating stakeholder perspectives and opinions on new technologies for disease control & surveillance
  10. Catalyzing R&D ecosystems in disease endemic countries.

Most of my research is currently based out of Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania,  with colaborators in multiple countries
