Peer review of funding applications

Across the School there is a wealth of experience in grant writing and funder knowledge. Several staff sit on funding committees and many more are called upon as experts to review proposals in their fields. If you would like to tap into this expertise to strengthen your own funding applications, this is the process you need to follow:

Step 1: Contact the TRM team* at least 3 weeks before the funder deadline with the following information:

  • Project title
  • Details of the scheme being targeted
  • A suggested expert reviewer in the Institute or in another Institute or School at the University with knowledge of the topic of the application

The TRM team will contact the expert reviewer to check availability and also recruit another reviewer from the Institute who isn’t an expert in the field of the proposal. Please take into account holiday periods when considering timelines.

Step 2: Submit the application to the TRM team for review at least 2 weeks before the funder deadline. The TRM team will then send your application to two colleagues for review. It will first go to the expert you have nominated (if available) and then on to a non-specialist. This will be done in a “relay” system to avoid multiple versions of the application containing different comments and suggestions.

Step 3: Within 1 week, you will receive feedback directly from the reviewer enabling you to follow up or seek clarification if necessary.

Fellowships The Institute is introducing a new peer review and proposal support system for Fellowship applications to take into account the particular challenges associated with them. This will be coordinated by the Institute’s Fellowship Committee. We encourage potential hosts and fellows to contact the Fellowship Committee** well in advance of any deadline.

Other resources On the Institute’s website there are some general tips for grant writing and specific guidance for particular schemes and fellowships. This can be found at grant advice.
