7th Annual INSPIRE Research Forum!

Image of the 2023 INSPIRE award winners with Professor Margaret HosieMany congratulations to the School’s VetGEMS Committee on the hugely successful INSPIRE Research Forum which was held earlier this week.  Professor Christopher Loughrey delivered the keynote address and opened proceedings with a presentation entitled  ‘Veterinary opportunities beyond clinical practice’.  Professor Loughrey tracked his journey from BVMS student and provided a fascinating insight on his current area of research which has a particular focus on the mechanisms by which cardiac disease leads to changes in heart architecture and function and how this adverse cardiac remodelling leads to heart failure.

Students who undertook research this past summer then had the opportunity to present their findings during oral presentations sessions.  The quality of the talks were exceptional, all of them well prepared and interesting, and the breadth of research was equally impressive.

In a strong field, a large number of outstanding presentations were unlucky to miss out, but many congratulations to all the winners:

First Prize - Srinija Venkateswaran
‘Expression of Immunohistochemical markers in Central and Peripheral Equine Sarcoid samples’

Second Prize -  Sora Ogawa
‘Comparing the early viral entry process in respiratory and virulent caliciviruses’

Third Prize - Alicia Higgins
‘Characterisation of skin cells derived from canine neurology cases as a potential source of mesenchymal stem cells’

Poster Prize - Samantha Peck
‘Utilizing Video Games in Veterinary Education with a Focus on Improving Knowledge and Diagnostic Skills for Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD)’

Earlier in the day, staff and students had been invited to a Breakfast Poster Session and an impressive number of posters illustrating the myriad of opportunities available to students wanting to integrate research into their career were on display to peruse over breakfast in the Mary Stewart Building.
