Research interests

Research focuses on better understanding the heterogeneity of outcome after head injury, and the development of effective interventions.  This work spans the range from very mild to extremely severe head injury and from specific impairments to general outcome in terms of recovery, disability and death with interest in biological markers and genetic factors may have implications for the late outcome.  He was President of the International Brain Injury Association 2009-12.

Professor McMillan is also the Research Director for the D.Clin.Psychology and MSc in Neuropsychology courses, and they have amongst the highest publication rates for student research in the UK.  He has a clinical role with Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board and is consultant adviser to them on rehabilitation after brain injury.  Associated with this combination of academic and research experience are national roles relevant to brain injury on the Managed Clinical Network for Brain Injury, as adviser to the National Head Injuries Association.

The Glasgow Outcome at Discharge Scale (GODS) has recently been developed.  This scale is designed to assess disability after a head injury when a patient is near to discharge from hospital.  The GODS is an inpatient version of the Glasgow Outcome Scale which is for use in the community.  The GODS and guidelines for its use is freely available here GODS and Guidelines .  Data on reliability and validity are to be found in the Journal of Neurotrauma.
