Biography
Dr Judith Brown is Project Manager for two MRC awards:
- Sleep, circadian rhythms and mental health in schools (SCRAMS)
- Mental Health Data Pathfinder award with an additional role in one of the sub-project streams (The Schools Health and Wellbeing Improvement Research Network – SHINE). The MHDP project aims to enhance mental health data cohorts through linkage to health, education and administrative datasets. It will investigate the overlap between mental and physical health problems and will develop a programme of schools-based mental health research in Scotland.
Judith’s role is split between Mental Health & Wellbeing and the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (in the Complexity Programme).
Previously Judith was a Research Fellow in the Healthy Working Lives Group. Judith’s work focused on monitoring and evaluating the interactions and determinants of work and health and in particular the nature, dynamics and needs of the workless population. This work resulted in the establishment of the Scottish Observatory for Work & Health. Judith worked on the MRC funded SOPIE project (Supporting Older People into Employment). SOPIE is a mixed methods longitudinal study involving collaboration between academics, DWP and a major Work Programme provider (Ingeus). The study is investigating the relationship between health, worklessness and the return to work process for the over 50s. Further the project also planned to undertake data linkage to NHS health data, to further explore the potential health impacts of engaging with the Work Programme and return to work. Other projects include a CSO/SCPHRP funded study evaluating the ‘Early Access to Support to You’ (EASY) sickness absence service in NHS Lanarkshire.
Research interests
- Mental health data cohorts and schools-based mental health research
- Sleep, circadian rhythms and mental health
- Monitoring and evaluating the interactions and determinants of work and health
- Observing and understanding those receiving benefit for health-related worklessness
- Studying clients engaging in return to work activity as part of the Work Programme
- Sickness absence research
