Biography

‌I worked as a farm animal veterinary practitioner in Australia for seven years before commencing an academic career in livestock production and health at Queensland Department of Primary Industries, then the University of Queensland in Australia and the University of Glasgow in the UK. My teaching and research interests are broad and revolve around nutritional, technological, genetic and management strategies for the control of production diseases and parasites of grazing livestock.

Professional History

1987 Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Hons II) University of Sydney

1987-1995 Mixed farm animal veterinary practice in South-eastern Australia

1995-1998 PhD in the Field of Veterinary Science and Animal Production: Factors affecting postpartum ovarian function in lactating dairy cows University of Queensland.

1996-1998 Senior Research Scientist, Mutdapilly Dairy Research Centre

1999-2001 Lecturer Farm Animal Medicine – University of Glasgow Faculty of Vet Med

2001-2009 Senior Lecturer then Associate Professor in Farm Animal Medicine

2006 Diplomate, European College of Bovine Health Management

2009 Graduate, Australian Institute of Company Directors

2009 to present, Professor of Animal Health and Production, University of Glasgow

Research interests

I aim to work on projects that contribute to the environmentally sensitive management of livestock, and to improved livestock and wildlife health, welfare and productivity, that promote biodiversity, and are compatible with equitable land-use principles, improving the livelihoods of the communities sharing access to the common resources.

  • Approaches
    1. Genetics: adaptation of livestock to minimise the requirement for interventions that might adversely impact on the environment or livelihoods.
    2. Causal inference methods: application and development of models for the quantification of risk factors for disease; effect of disease on efficiency; response to interventions.
    3. Sensors (on animal and remote): characterisation of animal state; adaptive behaviours; the need for interventions; responses to interventions.
    4. Faeces: characterisation of animal state: health, treatments, performance, adaptation to environment; the need for interventions; responses to interventions.
  • Scope
    1. Sustainable parasite control: Genetic improvement of host resistance; genetics of drug resistance in parasites; parasite control programs to delay drug resistance.
    2. Welfare and performance: Global analysis of easily available samples (omics); animal health and welfare indicators; production performance indicators.
    3. Management of livestock for wildlife: Sensors for livestock management; epidemiology; grazing behaviour; nutrient loading.

Teaching

I teach into each of the five years of the BVMS programme and into the Applied Animal Management II course of the BSc(Veterinary Biosciences) programme. I'm also course leader for BIOL5277 Wildlife and Livestock Management,  and BIOL5270 Genetic Tools for Animal Management, both online courses in the One Health Programme. I also contribute to the MSc(Food Security) Programme. Most of my teaching is on livestock genetics, livestock management, ticks and tick-borne diseases.
