Prof. George Tsirtsis (Department of Marine Sciences, Faculty of the Environment, University of the Aegean, Greece) will be giving a talk, entitled “Phytoplankton ecological variation in a regional sea: Do neutral or niche processes predominate?" on the Friday the 14th of October at 12 pm in LT2.
George’s research is focused on patterns of phytoplankton composition and productivity in space and time. In this talk he will present findings from the ECOGENE project, which aims to disentangle the role of spatial scale and local environmental processes in shaping phytoplankton assemblages. A key approach in this project is the use of both molecular and microscopic identification of phytoplankton genera to check whether these tell different stories. The main question is whether it is possible to resolve observed patterns in phytoplankton diversity through the application of novel spatial Eigen function methods and link these with proposed ecological theories.
