19 Oct 2017 - Celebrated Zimbabwean poet Chirikure Chirikure joins us for BHM 2017
It's the UK's Black History Month and we're fortunate to have one of Zimbabwe's most loved poets join us for a discussion on the "use and abuse of art in the Zimbabwean political environment". Chirikure Chirikure will trace the positive ways art has been used, and highlight the positive results. He will also talk about the way politicians have manipulated art and artists for their gains and political survival. In the process, he will highlight the damages that this has caused.
About the speaker:
Chirikure Chirikure is a talented and multi-award winning Zimbabwean poet, writer and musician. He is one of the pioneers of professional performance poetry in the country. He rose to prominence in the 1980s with his educative poems done in vernacular and English. His first volume of poetry, Rukuvhute received honourable mention in the 1990 Noma Awards. He was a fellow in Germany under the DAAD Berliner Kunstlerprogramm (Artists in Berlin Programme) in 2011.
