Centre for Spatial Reasoning

Spatial Reasoning Practitioner Conference
4 June 2026 - University of Glasgow

On the 4 June we welcomed teachers and local authorities from across Scotland and government representatives to the University of Glasgow for the inaugural Turner Kirk Centre for Spatial Reasoning STEM SPACE Practitioners Conference hosted at the University of Glasgow Advanced Research Centre.

Centre Director Professor Quintin Cutts provided a warm welcome and tied the day together, while Project Lead Dr Jack Parkinson kept our packed session to time with Anna Doyle and Claire Johnston coordinating

An engaging, insightful, fun and informative keynote presentation was delivered by the incredible Andy Brown from Education Scotland who emphasised how developing spatial skills can help us boost Scotland’s PISA Mathematics performance. Spatial skills and the STEM SPACE Project research are weaved into Scotland’s Curriculum Improvement Cycle, which will move our curriculum towards a Know-Do-Understand framework.

Practitioners from across Scotland then provided fantastic lightening talks on delivering STEM SPACE and MathsBURST lessons covering themes including delivery in composite and job-share classes, challenging contexts, spatial learning for inclusivity and equity and adapting lessons to meet learner needs.

The rest of the day was led by Jenny Kenny and Susie Marshall providing cross curricular Review of spatial skills to and following up with MathsBURST activities. The energy in the room was palpable and inspiring.

Follow up online sessions are taking place across June and a hub of resources is being expanded for all teachers and stakeholders.
