Spatial reasoning at SERA 2025

Jack Parkinson presented work on spatial reasoning to teachers and teaching researchers at SERA.
The annual Scottish Educational Research Association conference for 2025 took place in Aberdeen this year, bringing together researchers and practitioners across Scotland for a week of sharing research and building community.
The conference theme (Education: open to all?) was particularly relevant to the work being conducted by the team here at the Turner Kirk Centre for Spatial Reasoning, due to the potential for spatial skills to be a leveler for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Dr Jack Parkinson presented work on the relationship between spatial cognition and STEM learning, as well as sharing findings from preliminary research in schools.
The session triggered interesting discussion and reflection around the concept of spatial skills development as a tool for supporting those who aren't getting on at school, particularly in maths, where improving spatial skills has been shown to lead not only to improved outcomes, but also improved resilience and engagement.
