Gemma Smith's training event May 2022 - Ecology and Land Reform PGR Training Event organised by Ryan Dziadowiec

Gemma Smith is in the department of Celtic & Gaelic, and is in the final year of her PhD project, ‘Shieling Landscapes of North West Sutherland: people, place and ecology’.

The award from CSCS helped to facilitate the Ecology and Land Reform PGR Training Event organised by Ryan Dziadowiec (Department of Agroecology, Coventry University) and Gemma, which took place on the weekend of 6-8 May 2022 at The Shieling Project, near Beauly. Over the course of the weekend 50+ people heard from the speakers Iain Mackinnon, David Worthington, Andrew Mackillop, Elizabeth Ritchie, DJ Macleod, Chrissie Gillies, Magnus Davidson, Helen O’Keefe, Col Gordon and Bobby Macauley. They also enjoyed a half-day walk up to the historic shieling site in the hills of Glen Strathfarrar, communal feasting, and a cèilidh around the fire. The weekend resulted in some first-rate presentations, convivial discussions and many fruitful connections being made, and we thank the Centre for their vital contribution towards the event.
