Research summary

Kutlu Acun's research scrutinizes the relationship between federalism and democratic backsliding using three distinct methods from comparative politics: large-N analysis, case study, and online survey experiment. While the large-N analysis focuses on the structural relationship between federal constitutional features and democratic backsliding, shedding light on whether subnational autonomy and parties could ease backsliding pressures, the case study examines Indian federalism and reveals the mechanisms through a process-tracing approach. The online survey experiment forms the individual-level analysis of the research and questions the citizens' perception of federal norms and their erosion.
