Research title: Léopold Chauveau (1870-1940), the Age of the Monstrous, and Widening Access
Research Summary
My research concerns the career, contemporary and posthumous reception of Chauveau, a long-neglected author, illustrator, painter, sculptor, and sketcher who in 2020 was the subject of the major exhibition 'Au pays des monstres' [In the land of monsters] at the Musée d'Orsay. Working in collaboration with multiple cultural organisations and with the exhibition donor, the artist's grandson and archivist Marc Chauveau, I apply sociological concepts including neurodiversity and intersectionality to Chauveau's exploration of difference and depiction of himself finding refuge from social alienation within a community of 'companions', sympathetic 'monsters' he created. My thesis also refers to interviews with prestigious artists commissioned for the exhibition, and with artists who responded to a talk I delivered at Glasgow disability arts charity Project Ability, drawing on commonalities between the two groups to comment on wider challenges around inclusivity in the cultural sector.
