Thesis Title:  Intelligent Free Space Optical Communications

Free space optics (FSO) refers to the use of optical wireless communications in outdoor environments. FSO can be used in various applications in terrestrial, aerial, space, and deep-space communications. Examples of terrestrial FSO are building-to-building FSO links. Aerial FSO links include ground-to-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ground-to-high altitude platform systems (HAPSs), and HAPS-to-HAPS. Ground-to-satellite, satellite-to-ground, and satellite-to-satellite FSO links are instances of space FSO. Deep-space FSO can be realised between the Earth and a spacecraft in deep-space. This project aims to develop innovative techniques for enhancing the performance of FSO systems by introducing the use of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). IRSs are planar structures of metamaterials with subwavelength thickness that can be artificially engineered to control the wave reflection. IRSs can be utilised to increase coverage, enhance physical layer security, mitigate interference, and increase link reliability. Novel signal processing techniques and machine learning mechanisms will be applied to optimise the performance of IRS-assisted FSO links
