Professor David Cumming of the James Watt School of Engineering has been awarded the Institution of Engineering and Technology's Achievement Medal in Electronics.
 
Each year, the IET presents Achievement Medals to those who have made an impact across the engineering and technology sectors. Professor Cumming was presented with his award at an event in London on October 20th.

 
Professor Cumming’s award recognises his groundbreaking work on semiconductor sensors and microsystems integration, which has been published in more than 300 papers. His work includes the development of the CMOS ion sensor arrays that enabled the revolutionary Ion Torrent gene sequencing system.
 
He leads the University’s Microsystems Technology research group, which focuses on new developments in medical sensors and systems, lab-in-a-pill devices, terahertz technology, nanotechnology, and photonics, including metamaterials and surface plasmon resonance.
 
The IET Achievement Medal is the latest accolade Professor Cumming has received in recognition of his research, which also includes the Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award, which he received in 2011.
 
Professor Cumming has worked at the University of Glasgow since 1999 and currently holds the posts of Professor of Microsystems Technology and Electronic Systems and Director of the EPSRC UK Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum Imaging. He was head of the James Watt School of Engineering between August 2016 and July 2022.
 
Professor Cumming said: “I am very happy to have been recognised by my professional colleagues and it is a great honour to have been awarded an Achievement Medal by the IET.”
