University unveils new Learning and Teaching Centre

Move will set a new standard for education

The University of Glasgow's new Learning and Teaching Centre will support Academic staff to give students one of the best learning environments in the UK.

Staff from the Learning and Teaching Centre work with colleagues throughout the University to identify ways of making the learning experience better for all students. And by analysing new and emerging developments and opportunities, they are always at the cutting edge of developments in learning and teaching, which is a key part of the University's strategy, Building on Excellence.

Sir Muir Russell, University of Glasgow Principal, said: "We must give our students the highest possible quality of educational experience.

"The new Learning and Teaching Centre gives us a coordinated, effective and responsive service, properly resourced, with colleagues who have the right skills and the necessary knowledge to deliver first-class support to academic colleagues".

"This is all about is building on our excellent tradition in Glasgow. It brings together and focuses support services which we already had, and provides our academic community with the stimulus and support it needs to continue to provide an excellent learning experience for students and a modern learning environment fit for today's world."

Vice Principal Learning and Teaching, Professor Andrea Nolan, said: "Our aim is to ensure a future that promotes and celebrates learning and teaching rooted in the richness and diversity of our research activity, with the students at its heart.'

"The Learning and Teaching Centre supports the development and delivery of the University's Learning and Teaching strategy by working collaboratively with colleagues throughout the Institution. Centre staff identify, evaluate and disseminate new developments and good practice in support of enhancing the student learning experience. The Centre also embraces a 'horizon and future scanning' role to identify new and emerging developments and opportunities, and conducts appropriate research to assess the relevance and potential of these".

The Learning and Teaching Centre was formed by the drawing together of the Teaching and Learning Service, the Student Learning Service, Media Services and the Glasgow University Initiative in Distance Education.

Key services that the Centre provides include:

delivery of the new Lecturer and Teacher Programme, which is accredited by the Higher Education Academy;

curriculum review and evaluation of learning and teaching;

a full advice and guidance service on learning issues to all undergraduate and taught postgraduate students;

promotion of new ways of teaching and learning using technology, including the design of online courses;

a complete media production service including making promotional DVDs, innovative teaching aids, and creative preparation of materials for multi-format delivery, to filming key events from Graduations to VIP lectures
