Disabled Liverpudlian comedian Laurence Clark takes to the stage as part of 'One Glasgow'

Acclaimed disabled comedian Laurence Clark will perform on Friday 24 February at Glasgow University as part of "One Glasgow", a week of Equality and Diversity events organised by the University. As a wheelchair user Laurence has turned his own physical disability to a fertile field of comic inspiration.

Laurence's show, entitled 'The Jim Davidson Guide to Equality', was inspired by the cancellation of a Jim Davidson show due to Davidson's protest against having disabled people on his front row. Comedian Laurence points out that he would cancel his show if Jim Davidson was on the front row.

No stranger to controversy - Laurence was recently asked by Cherie Blair 'Do you do stand-up?' - 'The Jim Davidson Guide to Equality' promises to be an hour of biting political comedy as Davidson's ideas about equality are compared to Tony Blair's.

The aim of One Glasgow, running from 20-25 February 2006, is to celebrate and explore equality and diversity issues across campus with staff, students, and members of the local community. The exciting programme of thought provoking and challenging events, has already included a special 'Old Firm Alliance' Celtic and Rangers coaching session for children to tackle sectarianism and educate the next generation of football fans and players, and a screening of award winning director Ken Loach's "Ae Fond Kiss" including a guest appearance of screen actor Atta Yaqub.

Principal of the University, Sir Muir Russell comments: "The aim of One Glasgow is to challenge discrimination creatively and culturally in innovative ways and to promote a wider understanding of equality and diversity issues and achievements within the University of Glasgow community. The event has adopted a positive approach using exhibitions, workshops, theatre, comedy and film. Whilst many of the activities in the programme involve popular entertainment and an element of fun, there are important messages to be considered and hopefully those attending will leave with a little food for thought.'

The event is open to the public but is for over 18s only. The show will be held in the College Club, University of Glasgow at 7pm.
Tickets are required but can be booked free of charge by phoning 0141 330 3740/6977 or emailing sds@admin.gla.ac.uk.
This event is funded the Ferguson Bequest.
