Glasgow University Music Club Jubilee

Published: 1 March 2005

As part of the 50th jubilee celebrations, Glasgow University Music Club are presenting a programme of events beginning with the Opening Concert with alumni performers on 8th March.

When Frederick Rimmer formed the Glasgow University Music Club in 1954, its main aim was to nurture its members' interest in Chamber Music. Now in its 50th year, the Music Club is still going strong and offers students, staff and graduates the chance to develop their knowledge in all areas of music ヨ from early music to jazz. As it is predominantly run by students of Glasgow University, the Music Club Committee of 2005 is aware of the importance of offering a place for musicians of all levels, in order to foster a sense of appreciation, participation and encouragement. Music Club President, Yvonne Inglis explains, 'In giving everyone the chance to participate in all styles and genres, we try to present music in different lights ヨ as a source of learning or expression but overall as a means of enjoyment.'

Members are encouraged to keep playing through the establishment of open ensembles, such as Music Club Choir and Glasgow University Wind Band, which has been running successfully for 11 years. You could also be offered the chance to take up a place in more specialist groups, such as Big Band and Madrigirls. As well as offering the opportunity to be a part of an ensemble, regular Lunchtime and Evening concerts and Jazz nights held throughout the year offer a wealth of group and solo performances in an informal atmosphere. And emphasis on music appreciation is not forgotten ヨ members of the public and the Music Club alike may attend all of these events, often being unwitting test dummies for compositional premieres!

As part of the 50th jubilee celebrations, Glasgow University Music Club are presenting a programme of events beginning with the Opening Concert with alumni performers on 8th March. Concerts are open to everyone and offer the chance to see the different facets of the Music Club in action ヨ acoustic performances, Music Club Choir and the Early Music Ensemble are only some of the highlights. Don't miss out on this chance to celebrate with the Music Club because, after all, life begins at 50!

Jubilee Events run from 8th-11th March.
