The University of Glasgow's Research and Teaching Grant for 2004/05 will total £113.5M, an increase of £5M on the current year.

The University retains its top position in Scotland as the recipient of the largest funded Teaching Grant at £77M.

The significant increase of 9.6% to £31M of Research Grant continues to reflect the University's success in 2001 RAE, highlighting the dominance of the top two institutions in Scotland.

Principal, Sir Muir Russell, commented:

"We will use the extra money in the pursuit of excellence in teaching and research.

I am pleased to see that financial support for areas of research excellence has been strengthened and that Glasgow has continued to benefit from its greatly enhanced research profile originating from RAE 2001. The increased funding will enable us to continue our world-class research, whilst contributing to the economic, social and cultural wealth of Scotland.

Additionally, the increase in Teaching resource, which includes a specific allocation for additional funded places in Dentistry and Education, further strengthens our ability to contribute to the nation's health and wellbeing.

The 9.6% increase in funding announced for Widening Access initiatives is particularly welcome, and endorses our existing commitment and success in this area.

It is interesting to note that the current increase of 4.6% remains in line with that of the English Russell Group universities."
