Leading international health professionals and researchers will gather together in Glasgow on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March to discuss latest advances in clinical nutrition research

Leading health professionals and researchers from across the UK, Europe and the USA will gather together in Glasgow for the Nutrition Society & British Dietetic Association Meeting: 'Nutrition in the Clinical Management of Disease'. This two-day conference, jointly organised with the University of Glasgow, will discuss the latest advances in clinical nutrition research and consider how new evidence in clinical nutrition is changing perspectives of how to manage patients in order to prevent and treat under-nutrition more effectively.

Under-nutrition is a nutritional problem often caused by chronic and acute illness, which is still fairly common in Scottish children and adults, especially in hospitalised patients. Such nutritional problems can often exacerbate the underlying disease, leading to impaired quality of life, clinical complications, and higher risk of premature death for the undernourished patient.

On Thursday 27 , Professor Roland Jung, Chief Scientist, Scottish Executive Health Department, will look at the nutritional challenges facing the Scottish population and the NHS in Scotland. Drs Angela Madden and Rosemary Richardson will describe advances in the management of liver and bowel disease while Dr Anemonie Schols will focus on chronic lung disease.

On Friday 28 , Professor Lori Stark, from the Childrens Hospital Cincinnati, and Dr Vanessa Poustie will discuss recent evidence on how to improve nutritional management of children who have chronic diseases and Professor Ken Fearon, University of Edinburgh, will describe how nutritional management of the surgical patient has changed in the light of new research evidence.
