The University of Glasgow and The Global Citizenship Project to host a day of events devoted to both local and global citizenship issue

On Monday 9th June the University of Glasgow and The Global Citizenship Project are hosting a day of events devoted to citizenship issues. Organised primarily for all students in the Faculty of Education, the event aims to improve young people's ability to understand and participate fully in society at local, national and international levels. It is hoped that several hundred students will participate over the course of the day.

This is the second annual "Big Day" and once more it aims to be a truly inspirational, informative and fun day. The intention is to provide participants with an opportunity to reflect on some fundamental issues in and beyond education.

Covering a huge spectrum of issues, the day's events will be led by Faculty staff and students, representatives from IDEAS and special guest contributors. Amongst those speaking will be Helen Miller from the charity Nil by Mouth who will focus on tackling sectarianism in the classroom and Dr Mark Olssen, a reader at the University of Surrey. Lesley Riddoch will also run her own session as will Tommy Sheridan MSP and Patrick Harvie MSP.

Also attending the event will be children from Hillview Nursery, the first educational establishment in Renfrewshire to receive an eco-schools green flag by ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns). These four-year olds will explain how they have incorporated environmental practices into their daily nursery activities. Bernadette Macpherson, Hillview Nursery Manager, said: " It is so important for modern society to instil the value of becoming active citizens at a young age. These children are an example to us all because they are gladly embracing their learning, they know their rights and, by mapping out their own future, they are taking responsibility for the world around them."

Representatives from organisations such as Oxfam, Amnesty International, Save the Children, UNICEF and Raleigh International will also speak on issues such as the role of Trade, Ecological Debt and Human Rights. Alongside keynote addresses the day will also offer music, drama, debate and role-playing events.
