University today confers further honorary degrees to mark 550th anniversary

Religious leaders, scientists, an astronaut and a broadcaster are among honorary graduates at a ceremony today 21 Nov.

The second and final jubilee graduation ceremony marking the University's 550th anniversary will take place at 11.00 a.m. today, Wednesday 21 November, in the Bute Hall of the University.

Professor Sir Graeme Davies, Principal of the University, will present the following persons for the Honorary Degrees shown:

SIR MUIR RUSSELL, Permanent Secretary, The Scottish Executive, for the Degree of Doctor of the University

Emeritus Professor Sir Ferguson Anderson, The David Cargill Professor of Geriatric Medicine in the University of Glasgow, 1965-1979 accepted an invitation to receive the award of the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science at this Jubilee Ceremony. We regret to have to record that Sir Ferguson died during the summer.

Given the weather forecast we cannot guarantee the usual procession and photo opportunity afterwards in the East Quad. You may want to take advantage of the photo positions during the ceremony in the west gallery of the Bute Hall (enter by Turret G). There will also be undercover opportunities to photograph the procession on the Hunterian Museum staircase as it leaves the ceremony. The event starts at 11 and is expected to end between 1230 and 1.00.
