The Executive Director of Finance outlined the University’s current financial position, highlighting the tighter budgets we would be working to over the next four years.  While UofG is in a relatively strong position compared to many, it is imperative that we deliver the budget and avoid additional expenditure if we are to safeguard jobs.

For their part, the unions highlighted the fact that the current pay and grading structure clearly needs to be reviewed and that the University committed to this in 2022 as part of the exceptional pay offer accepted by union members.  The situation has been made worse by the 2025 national pay settlement of 1.4%; members of staff are deeply frustrated and increasingly concerned to see an improvement in pay.

University senior management representatives acknowledged the sense of frustration and recognised that the current pay and grading structure required review.  At the same time, they emphasised that no additional money is available and it would be wrong to create false expectations of an early resolution.

Despite this, both sides agreed that further work on options would be helpful.  Trade union reps will meet with People & OD colleagues and undertake further work on the pay and grading structure in an ongoing spirit of partnership.  A further meeting of the wider group will be arranged in due course.
