Third party internet services (e.g. web hosting for external organisations)

Third party internet services (e.g. web hosting for external organisations)

Most internet services are provided by IT Services to fully accredited members of the University of Glasgow. However, IT Services is also able to provide internet services to third parties whose business is in accordance with the education or research aims and policies of the University of Glasgow. This would include hosting a web site for an academic society where that society includes accredited members of the university, for example.

Register for a Third Party Internet Services Account

A third party wishing to make use of university internet services must first register for a 'Third Party Internet Services Account'. A registration fee is payable for this account, in addition to any further costs payable for Computing Service internet services. To register, download an application form in which you should sign an indemnity agreement and a promise to abide by the JANET Acceptable Use Policy. The form should be returned to the Director of the IT Services.

The definition of "third party"

If you are unsure whether you or your organisation is considered a third party to the university, this definition may help

  • an individual is considered third party if he or she is not an accredited member of the University of Glasgow
  • an organisation is considered third party if the organisation is a separate legal entity from the University of Glasgow. It is immaterial whether a third-party organisation is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Glasgow as a Third Party Internet Services Account will still be required.

To enable the IT Services to provide third party internet services and host third party web sites, an annual fee is paid to obtain a 'JANET proxy licence' . Further information on proxy licences are available from the document 'JANET Connection Policy'.
