| Provenance: | Marcellus Philoxenus/Marcello Filosseno (1450-1520), poet and Servite friar: heavily washed-out inscription on l6r (partially legible under ultraviolet light) “M cccc Lxxxx in 15 octobris uenetijs in edibus ioan[n]is aloysij [...] ego marcellus philoxen[us] claudiane le[c]tionis meta[m] attigi”. Edward Harley (1689-1741), Lord Harley; from 1724 2nd Earl of Oxford: see Binding. Thomas Osborne (d. 1767), bookseller: purchased all the Harleian printed books; no. 4051 or 4052 in Osborne’s 'Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae', vol. 1 (London: 1743) and no. 933 or 950 in 'Osborne’s Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae', vol. 3 (London: 1744). Richard Mead (1673-1754) M.D.: Mead’s shelfmark in ink “E,3,,8.” on front flyleaf; lot 1715, p. 231 (6 May 1755) in 'Bibliotheca Meadiana' (London: 1754); sold for £2.2.0 to Anthony Askew according to the priced copy (partially annotated with buyers’ names) of the Mead sale catalogue in University of Glasgow Library (shelfmark Mu33-e.30). | Binding: | England, 18th-century gold-tooled red morocco; bound for Lord Harley by Thomas Elliott. On both covers triple fillets form a frame: within the frame is a floral roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 14, Elliott roll 3), and an ornamental roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 14, Elliott roll 4). The head and foot of the spine are decorated with Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, Elliott roll 2, and the spine compartments are decorated with two tools, one of which is Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Elliott no. 18, and the other is closely similar to Elliott no. 6; the edges are decorated with Elliott roll 2; marbled endpapers.
