Senate

As of 1 August 2019, an Ordinance comes into effect re-establishing the University’s Senate.

The new composition means that Senate will have an overall membership of c.140. This number comprises the Principal (the President of Senate), the Clerk of Senate, the Vice Principals, Chief Operating Officer and University Secretary, the Heads of Schools and Directors of Research Institutes, student members and elected members. The last group constitute a majority of the membership.

The Senate as newly re-established will have its first meeting in October 2019. At its first meeting, one of its actions will be to dissolve the Council of Senate. The Council of Senate – in formal terms, a committee of Senate – was established in 2014 to deal with all normal Senate business. The new composition of Senate will allow the University to address the concerns with the previous composition of Senate and which the Council of Senate has addressed pro-term. The new composition brings the University’s academic governance fully into line with the Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Act 2016.
