Rachel Maclean: The Queen, The Lion and The Unicorn

Wednesday 23 November 2022
6.00pm - 7.30pm
Hunterian Art Gallery
Free admission - booking required

We are delighted to host Glasgow-based artist Rachel Maclean for this one-off event in the Hunterian Art Gallery after hours. We'll be sharing a special screening of Rachel's short film, 'The Lion and the Unicorn', followed by a Q&A with contemporary art curator Dominic Paterson.

Maclean works predominantly with digital videos, and combines a variety of references to popular culture and genres including children’s TV shows, horror movies, British comedy, video games, reality TV and YouTube videos. Her work is defined by a constant back and forth between the seductive and the unsettling, revealing a dark reality behind her whimsical imagery.

'The Lion and The Unicorn' is a short film inspired by the heraldic symbols found on the Royal Coat of Arms of The United Kingdom, the lion (representing England) and the unicorn (representing Scotland). The piece uses representations of both alliance and opposition to explore national identity within the context of the 2014 referendum on Scottish independence.

Join us in the Hunterian Art Gallery where you can see Rachel's artwork 'The Queen' in person and hear from the artist herself about her practice.
