Thinking about what we do in theatre, and what theatre can do.
This informal workshop with theatre-maker Andy Smith is split into two parts. In the first he will offer reflections on his nearly 20-year practice, covering some foundational principles and concepts. In the second part he will focus on how these ideas appear in the ‘plays for the people’ his latest series of works, the most recent example of which is A CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY – a performance that invites the assembled audience to play and present different ideas and opinions connected to the subject of the climate emergency.

Andy Smith is an acclaimed theatre-maker based in the North-West of England. As well as the PLAYS FOR THE PEOPLEseries, a long-form project which he has been developing since 2018, his most recent works include the plays The Preston Bill (2015), SUMMIT (2018), as well as the performance work COMMONISM (2018), a collaboration with the Norwegian artist Amund Sjølie Sveen. Andy has also collaborated with the theatre maker Tim Crouch since 2004, co-directing (along with Karl James) a number of plays including An Oak Tree, The Author and most recently Truth’s A Dog Must To Kennel.
