In her campaign for social justice, with a modus operandi of “small signs, big questions, fabulous wardrobe”, ArtActivistBarbie has been staging her own mini -protests all over the UK since 2018. For centuries museums and art galleries have been upheld as sites of knowledge, truth and authority. ArtActivistBarbie challenges this view, and publicly protests the unequal representation of women artists and problematic depiction of women in art.

The person behind this little campaigner is Dr Sarah Williamson, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education and Professional Development at the University of Huddersfield. At this special event, Sarah will share the story of ArtActivistBarbie and how the most famous doll in the Western world came to be redeployed as a fearless feminist activist. The innovative and imaginative work, which is documented on Twitter (@BarbieReports), will be showcased, and the notion of ‘making good trouble’ explored. Expect to be educated and entertained about ArtActivistBarbie’s disruptive and subversive activism with a visual array of photographs and behind the scenes stories.

Sarah says “I am really looking forward to joining you at The Hunterian. ArtActivistBarbie is a truth-sayer with a feminist gaze, and I will enjoy sharing some of her playful provocations in what she likes to describe as ‘Patriarchal Palaces of Painting’! Once you have seen things through the eyes of ArtActivistBarbie, you may never see them in the same way again!”
