Mark Sudbury (Keynote speaker)
Mark Sudbury, Head of Reputation, The World 100 Reputation Network
Mark is Head of World 100 & Reputation, joining the World 100 Reputation Network in September 2017. The University of Glasgow has been a member of the W100 Network for more than a decade.
He led communications and marketing activity at University College London (UCL) for nearly 10 years, helping to build reputation and establish it as a global brand.
Mark was one of a small group of Communications Directors who came together to establish the World 100 Reputation Network in 2007, and became its first Chair. He has presented at conferences around the world on university reputation, communications and marketing. He has also played key roles in the networks of Communications Directors at the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and the Russell Group.
Earlier in his career, Mark worked for the UK government where he managed communications around legislation which led to a ban on smoking in public places. He was Head of Public Affairs at the Football Association, the governing body for soccer in England, and started his career at the University of Sussex.
Rachel Sandison (Chair)
Rachel Sandison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, External Engagement & Vice Principal, External Relations, University of Glasgow
Rachel is responsible for leading the University of Glasgow’s strategy for external engagement covering an integrated portfolio of Marketing and Communications; Brand and Reputation Management; Student Recruitment; Admissions; International Policy and Partnerships; Widening Access and Lifelong Learning; Development and Alumni Relations; and Civic Engagement. Rachel is also the University’s Refugee & Asylum Seeker Champion.
Rachel is the University’s Universitas 21 network Senior Leader, a Board member of the University’s European network, The Guild, and the University lead for the CIVIS European University Alliance, thereby supporting the activity of a global group of research-intensive universities.
Rachel is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and currently a Global Trustee of CASE, whilst also contributing to several sector advisory boards both at home and overseas.
Professor Katherine Belov
Professor Katherine Belov AO BSc (Hons) PhD, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Pro-Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement, Professor of Comparative Genomics
Professor Kathy Belov is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) at the University of Sydney. In this position, she takes responsibility for managing the development and execution of the University’s global engagement strategy. Key priorities are the development of the capacity of academic and professional staff to support international student learning and international research collaborations and to achieve educational excellence in the international arena. She also promotes the University’s position in the international academic and research community and identifies and enables strategic opportunities for partnership and collaboration in research and education.
Kathy’s research is based in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) and her focus is on comparative genomics and immunogenetics of Australian wildlife. Her team study Tasmanian devils, koalas, wallabies, platypus, and many other species. Kathy has received two Eureka awards, the Crozier medal, the Fenner medal and the MJD White medal for her research.
Vivienne Stern MBE
Vivienne Stern MBE, Director of Universities UK International (UUKi)
UUK represents UK universities around the world and works to enable them to flourish internationally.
Vivienne has over 20 years’ experience of working in higher education policy and politics at national and international level. Prior to her role in UUKi, Vivienne was Head of Political Affairs at Universities UK, and led the sector’s response to several major pieces of legislation relating to universities. Before that she worked for the Chair of the House of Commons Education Select Committee, and as policy specialist working on topics including quality, student experience, innovation and university-business links.
She is a member of several Boards and advisory committees, including the Education Sector Advisory Group of the Departments for Education and International Trade; the Board of UKRI’s Fund for International Collaboration; the British Council’s Higher Education Advisory Group and the Board of the Council of British International Schools.
She is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, where she studied English Literature.
Professor Johan Lauwereyns
Professor Johan Lauwereyns, Vice-President of International Affairs, Kyushu University, Japan
Johan Lauwereyns (1969) obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Leuven in Belgium in 1998.
He has conducted research on the cognitive and neural mechanisms of decision-making at Juntendo University in Japan, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
In 2010 he shifted to Kyushu University, where he became a Full Professor in 2013. He has published widely, including academic papers in journals such as Nature and Neuron, the monographs The Anatomy of Bias and Brain and the Gaze, both with The MIT Press.
In 2020, he was appointed Vice-President of International Affairs at Kyushu University.
