CaCHE Director, Prof Ken Gibb Responds to council tax proposal

Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHEProf Ken Gibb looks at The Scottish Government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) announcement of a short consultation process on changing the multipliers for higher band council tax properties. The proposal is to raise more revenue for local government, repeating the process that occurred after the 2016 Scottish election.

The consultation paper states that the aim is to deliver more tax income in a fair way, with the burden falling on those who can bear it most. The paper also acknowledges that the cost of living crisis is a major concern, and that the government is committed to providing support to those who are struggling.

The consultation will run for six weeks, from July 12 to August 26. The Scottish Government and COSLA are encouraging people to participate and share their views on the proposal.

CaCHE will respond more fully to the consultation, which closes on 20 September.
