The event, hosted by the University's Initiative on Global Markets on 17 February, celebrated both the 300th birthday of Adam Smith and 125 years of Chicago Booth.

Professor Peltzman has been a faculty member at the university since 1973 and is one of the senior statesmen of the Chicago School.

In his talk, he discussed the history of the Chicago School of Economics, reflecting on commonalities between Adam Smith's thinking and the Chicago School, and common public misunderstandings of each. The conversation was moderated by IGM Co-Director Eric Budish.

Professor Peltzman said: "I am deeply honoured to participate in the University of Glasgow's celebration of Adam Smith’s birthday. Of course, he had an enduring influence on economics and economic policy. His work is perhaps more relevant today than any time since I first encountered it."

As part of an on-going conversation, in May the University of Glasgow’s Professor Graeme Roy joined Professor Peltzman to reflect on the themes of this lecture.
