Throughout 2023, the University of Glasgow is marking the 300th anniversary since the birth of Adam Smith with a number of celebratory events and activities. This unique and engaging programme will be an opportunity to renew the global interest in Adam Smith and bring his ideas and legacy to contemporary debates around the world.

The University of Glasgow is partnering with The University of Hong Kong Business School to deliver a lecture as part of the Smith Around the World Lecture Series. This lecture will be delivered by Professor Zhiwu Chen, Chair Professor of Finance and Director for Humanities and Social Sciences.

In this lecture, Professor Chen will argue that Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hangzhou’s rise to economic prominence showcases the power of Smithian growth drivers. He will also share his research highlighting the narrow nature of the productivity-only perspective used by economic and other historians in examining human progress.

We hope you can join this special event to celebrate Adam Smith in Hong Kong. You can find out more about the many ways the University of Glasgow is marking the Adam Smith Tercentenary and get involved online.
