Student support
Whether you require support to ensure that you are making the most of University life or to address a particular issue or concern, we are here to help you. Dedicated support for MA (Social Sciences) degree students is provided via the Academic Advising Service, the Curriculum Guidance and Support Team and the Student Support Officers. We work alongside our School colleagues who can help with programme and course-specific matters (contact details on Moodle); our colleagues in the CoSS Student Experience Team; and, support services across the University which are outlined and detailed on MyGlasgow.
Academic Advising Service
The MA (Social Sciences) Academic Advising Service provides students with personalised academic mentorship and support, encouraging engagement, supporting wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging to a learning community. Advisers of Studies use their knowledge, skills and experience to provide proactive and responsive guidance to their advisees, with reference to and/or signposting towards other support functions/contacts as required. Advising contact typically takes the form of in-person and online meetings and email exchanges.
Students participate in biannual advising meetings to discuss academic progress and learner experience from degree and student perspectives. You can, of course, contact your Adviser proactively. If you are considering significant changes to your studies or you are concerned about any aspect your academic progress, your Adviser will be able to help.
Your Adviser of Studies works alongside an Advising Service Leadership team comprising the Chief Adviser of Studies, Deputy Chief Adviser of Studies and Senior Advisers. If your circumstances are more complex or you are no longer on-track academically, you may meet with a member of the Advising Leadership Team who typically has extensive advising and other relevant experience of student support.
You can find your Adviser of Studies' name and contact details in your student centre in MyCampus. If you are unable to contact them for any reason, please forward your email to the Advising Service Leadership team, explaining that you cannot reach your Adviser, but also ensuring that you have allowed at least two working days for a response. Please do not simultaneously email all listed advising contacts.
