Tuesday 5 May 2026, 1300 - 15.00
Room 207, 10 Professor's Square

Feminist Café is a space to gather over coffee and pastry and to catch-up with colleagues and PGRs working on gender and sexuality. On 5 May, we will be hosting our own Dr Mirjam Müller. Mirjam joined the School of Law last September as a Lecturer in Feminist Legal and Political Theory, and she will be giving a talk on her project:

'Ambivalent care: authoritarianism, control and resistance'

This talk will outline a broader project that examines the relationship between care and authoritarianism, specifically how care functions simultaneously as an instrument of authoritarian control and as a resource for opposition to it. The project begins by challenging the assumption that care is inherently opposed to authoritarian governance and control. It argues instead that care often lies at the very heart of authoritarian projects and is shaped and structured by authoritarian logics: most notably when it is extended exclusively to members of the 'nation', rendering others unworthy of protection or recognition. Yet care also constitutes a potential site of contestation and resistance, as when practices of care are mobilised to protect vulnerable individuals from state coercion or neglect.

In addition to coffee and tea, we will provide vegetarian and vegan lunch (take it while it's hot!). No need to sign-up (but please get in touch if you have dietary restrictions). As ever, all welcome and free to join for all or part of the session.
